Free Burn
August 2, 2024
Free Burn is an Alternative RnB-esque project with pop and Latin rhythmic influences. CEC relies on shakers and bongos to carry the groove while drawing on mixing engineer Leslie Brathwaite’s style of having a knocking kick, snare, and bass. CEC’s voice gets its appeal from its smooth tone and low range, often being compared to Toni Braxton, Charlotte Day Wilson, and Meshell Ndegeocello.
Free Burn is the perfect EP for listeners looking for a mid-energy beat or sapphic love story. Free Burn takes its name from the stage of a fire that has passed the initial and growth stages and is consuming all available fuel, unrestrained by any suppression system. After years of honing their production chops and working towards creating music that was an accurate reflection of their breadth of influences and skills, Free Burn is the result: CEC’s stage of free burning.

A producer and artist from Treaty 1 Territory, CEC has lived in Canada, The US, and Spain, and writes music in both English and Spanish. They strategically blend mellow elements of RnB with the groove of Latin percussion and energy of pop. Their songs are primarily built around guitar. However, CEC’s distinct sound comes from their percussive production choices and smooth vocal stacking. Their voice draws comparisons to Toni Braxton, Charlotte Day Wilson, and Meshell Ndegeocello.
CEC believes that people are attracted to authenticity and that confidence comes from expressing their true self, which is why they feel liberated in writing more explicitly queer music. As an RnB-leaning artist, they recognizing and are passionate about the work and influence of Black artists and musicians in the genre (and most genres, but specifically RnB) and aware of the mobility afforded to white artists when categorizing themselves and their work. They’re heavily influenced by the work of 70s soul artists such as Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye, and more contemporary ones such as Syd, Daniel Caesar, Yussef Dayes, Lianne La Havas, and KAYTRANADA. One of the RBCxMusic First Up artists of 2022, CEC’s music is distinguishable by its slow groove, intimate lyrics, and soaring vocal layers.
